In the aftermath of September 11th 2001, the links between international terrorism and the international drug trade became a source of increased activity in law enforcement, government, the media and academia, particularly in the US – as shown in Graph 1. The term ‘narcoterrorism’, often used then, was in fact not new: it emerged in the early 1980s to describe the activities of groups such as the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in Colombia, and the Shining Path (Senderoso Luminoso) in Peru….
