The report goes over some of the early commentary on how the pandemic has impacted violent extremism, and more importantly, how that impacts our understand of preventing and countering violent extremism. It discusses social and economic consequences of COVID-19 on violent extremism and what opportunities are further opened for extremist groups to exploit. It also gives a fresh look at how to integrate and mainstream P/CVE initiatives into broader development efforts may be needed in order to head off the potential for future increases in violent extremism during the pandemic – and some considerations for reshaping P/CVE programmes to account for new pandemic issues (such as vaccines) and overall trends employed by extremist groups.
