Editor’s Note: Programs for countering violent extremism—or CVE, as it is known in the jargon—may be in jeopardy. The incoming administration, in its rhetoric at least, has emphasized “tough” solutions to the problem of terrorism and seems little interested in softer approaches that might discourage radicalization or deradicalize existing terrorists. But while government programs might be in jeopardy, it is possible that the private sector might step in: an approach perhaps more in keeping with a Trump administration’s emphasis on business over government. Eric Rosand of the Prevention Project (and a nonresident fellow here at Brookings) and Alistair Millar of the Global Center argue that the Trump administration can and should better harness the private sector to aid in CVE and offer steps for thinking about the private sector’s role.
